A sweet, ultimately heartwarming lilliputian tale near an imaginative young girl and her parents,

My Mom Is Trying to Ruin My Life taps into two common plenty childhood experiences: finding parents embarrassing, and chaffing at the restrictions they impose. The agreeable, over-the-top scenarios the little girl imagines in the story will keep young listeners entertained, while the accompanying watercolor artwork by Diane Goode, who also illustrated Kate Feiffer's President Pennybaker , accentuates the humor of the text. I enjoyed this one quite a bit, more than I thought I would, picking it upwards. Something virtually the cover led me to wait another spoiled little girl story (something alike to Louise the Big Cheese , or Eloise ), but our narrator here is just an ordinary daughter with a good eye. Recommended to anyone looking for fun motion-picture show-books well-nigh the parent-kid bail, and the ways that children simultaneously rely upon and sometimes wish to escape their mothers and fathers.

A standalone picture book of a young girl with embarrassing parents.

My Take
It'due south that age-sometime embarrassment every kid faces equally they abound, when a parent tin't do annihilation right in public. Kisses? Ick. Hugs? Ick.

Of course some of the means in which Mom is ruining her life are sensible prohibitions. Others? Yep, I'd exist pissy besides.

Fortunately the daughter is into equality (and a starting time-person protagonist point-of-view)…'crusade Dad is trying to ruin her life as well. Yep. All the usual, inconsiderate expectations. Yeesh.

Some of the little girl'southward plans are too funny, specially every bit she follows their, um, natural consequences. Get your kids' imaginations going with their own plans…and help them find those consequences. Eeep.

Goode'south illustrations are terrific. I'm thinking pen and ink and watercolors for these soft yet cheerful graphics.

This would be an splendid story to talk over (that's such a nasty word. Sounds like WORK.). What if nosotros say, the story offers up opportunities to retrieve up all the terrible things your child thinks yous're doing to ruin their lives! Then option and choose the ones where you tin be less "atrocious". 'Cause that catastrophe will definitely brand your kids re-think.

The Characters
Mom. Dad. Imaginative little daughter.

The Cover and Championship
The embrace is also sweet for words with its creamy background that contrasts well with the pink and green of the championship (which is in different sizes in a funky font) at the top, followed by Mom in her pink clothes with green chugalug and handbag angle over to kiss her angry daughter, dressed in greenish with a pinkish belt. The author's and illustrator's names are in white at the bottom of the embrace within a red-violet band…with love.

The title is merely half right, for, while My Mom is Trying to Ruin My Life, Dad is doing his office too.

This humorous realistic fiction picture book is a great take on the thoughts we have all had as children, of our parents' love embarrassing us and wishing to run away. There are multiple pictures on each page in a manner that illustrates the timeline and thoughts of the picayune girl. The pictures are simple, and filled in with watercolor. The backgrounds remain white to blend in with the page and lend to the idea that they are coming from the girl's imagination, as "thought bubbles" then to speak. Recommended for ages 4-vii as a read aloud, as the younger ages volition relate and appreciate the theme of the story. Recommended for ages 5-8 as an independent reader for the spelling patterns and vocabulary used. ...more

All seems perfect, until the girl realizes that that would leave her all alone and scared. So maybe it'south non the best programme afterward all.

This sassy book has a sense of humor that keeps it from becoming bratty. The litany of wrong-doings of both the father and mother are humorous and even children volition see right through them. Considering all children feel this way about their parents at some time, they volition relate effortlessly to the feelings on the page. Goode's illustrations nicely use the white space on the page.
